Your teacher is correct - the 2nd note of m. 6 should be an A natural. See you Thursday!

Mr. Laux,
In the 1st violin part of the Brahms, the A in measure 6 is an A flat in the copied version, but Mr. Sheinburg says it should be an A natural. Is it a flat or a natural? Thanks!

Hi Amber,

Thanks for catching this and bringing it to my attention; it was my mistake. Please see the linked PDF below (measures are marked with a star) for the correct bowings. If you are able, please pass this information along to your teacher and any other violas you may know who will be performing with us. I will be sure to announce and correct this mistake at our first rehearsal. See you next week! :-)

Allison,

First, let me apologize for the delay in my response. The holidays have kept me very busy. I have two young boys and it was quite the exiting Christmas this year. :-)

I'm assuming you meant measure 132. This has the high E you are describing. Please follow the bowings in the parts you were provided. This will help make sure everyone is together. I'm getting excited. Only a little over one week away!!

Mr. Laux,

I was wondering if the bowing in measures 117-118 of the Brahms viola part was correct. The double down bow doesn't really make much sense.

Thanks.

Hi Mr Laux,
On the second page of the Brahms Academic Orchestra, some of the bowings we practiced for the audition excerpt are different than the ones given to us on the copy. Starting at measure 32 in the first violin part the high e is marked as a down bow on the copy but ad an up bow on our audiopn except. Which one should we do? Thanks so much! I can't wait until January!

Emma,

Thanks for finding this! Excellent work! The harmony in both measures is an E diminished 7th chord. E, G, B-flat, D-flat. In both measure 245 and 246, all E's should be natural and all D's should be flat. I'll post a screen shot of the original Brahms score on this page. :-)

The video quality of the iPhone 4 is great. I could even do a quick edit with the iPhone's built-in "trim" feature.

Mr. Laux,

In measure 245 of the Brahms cello part, does the D-flat continue in the lower octave and should the E be flat? Is this bar fully diminished like the one before it? (Our part is written with no accidentals other than the flat on the first D.)

Thank you!
